Our Programs & Projects

AFRICAN COMMUNITY IN
CENTRAL INDIANA
The community served by
the African Center represents people and families from 34 African
nations with approximately 150 distinct cultural identities and
seven distinguished main language groups: English, French, Arabic,
Kiswahili, Somali, Amharic and Hausa/Fulani/Pula. The African-born
people and their families in Central Indiana are estimated at
29,652 compared to 1,584 in 1995 when the African Center started
to monitor the data.
IDENTIFIABLE CHALLENGES
Identifiable challenges
are more prominent in areas of healthcare, education, affordable
housing, communicative skills, job training and retention, civic
and public systems, legal and financial systems, and
post-migration trauma, social and cultural adjustment. These
challenges are being channeled to create opportunities for
self-help programs and capacity building. The benevolent community
has been proactive in this area by asserting itself with strong
statement that people of America do open their hearts to help the
poor, assist the sick, protect the most vulnerable in the society
and inspire individuals who work hard, even refugees to triumph.
